Artest to Houston. Mavs Do Nothing.

By Daniel Dessinger | July 29, 2008

While I did not expect Artest to become a Maverick, it was because I thought he might actually stick it out in Sacramento. But tonight’s headlines tell us that Ron Artest will be headed to Houston in a trade for Bobby Jackson and probably Donte Greene.

Another opportunity bites the dust. How did Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson manage to spend so much energy and money getting Jason Kidd to Dallas and fail so miserably to shop Josh Howard? It can’t be THAT hard to trade him. He’s still pretty talented.

The NBA Comes to OKC

By Aaron Phillips | July 6, 2008

It is ironic that I am the one actually writing this post, seeing how I really have no connection to Oklahoma and my good friend Daniel does. He is also one of those dreaded Sooner fans. I don’t hold it against him as it makes for some interesting friendly wagers.

As you know, the Seattle Supersonics are moving to OKC. They will NOT keep the Supersonics name or colors, in hopes that another team will move to Seattle once a new and updated arena is built.

Here are some teams you might see moving to Seattle:

NBA.com Misprint on Gerald Green

By Daniel Dessinger | July 6, 2008

Some of you have pointed out to me that NBA.com says San Antonio picked up Gerald Green. This is why you have editorial control over your website. Someone needs to review this data and ensure its accuracy.  While you would expect NBA.com to be the leader in accurate NBA reporting, human error is inevitable.

To allay your concerns, all other reports including quotes from Dallas Mavericks front office indicate that Gerald Green is a Dallas Maverick. Don’t worry about San Antonio. They have a good chance of picking up Corety Magette. Gerald Green isn’t even on their radar.

Beasley’s Blog is Bogus

By Daniel Dessinger | July 5, 2008

You can get the “firsthand account” here. I know we expect PR specialists and reputation managers to get involved on behalf of high profile clients, but sometimes it’s too much.

Example. #2 draft pick Michael Beasley was injured during his first practice with the Miami Heat. All we heard up front was that he took an elbow to the chest and went to the hospital? Do what?

PR nightmare for Beasley and the Miami Heat. With rumors swirling that Pat Riley didn’t like Beasley as a fit for his team, the Heat have some BS to navigate too.

Is the Mavericks Roster Taking Shape?

By Aaron Phillips | July 5, 2008

With everything that we as fans have been hearing and seeing in the media, blogs, and rumor sites it’s hard to get a clear grasp of what the 2008-2009 Mavericks will look like. This is what we know Gerald Green is a Maverick or is he???? Diop is going to be signed with the MLE or is he???

There is speculation that Dallas and New Jersey will try to work out a sign and trade apparently this benefits both teams…why you ask? Well Diop has already made it clear he wants to be in Dallas sign and trade benefits new jersey because they will get something back and it benefits the Mavericks because they wouldn’t have to use the MLE on Diop instead they could use it to sign a free agent….Maggette and Posey seem to be high on the Mavericks wish list…will this happen I will be thoroughly surprised if either of those guys sign with Dallas..Posey will stay put with the Celtics and Maggette is going to sign with the Spurs but that’s just my gut.

Gerald Green joins the Mavs

By Daniel Dessinger | July 3, 2008

A second move made by Dallas this week was to get a verbal agreement from Gerald Green, former NBA Dunk Contest winner and runner-up. At 6′8″ and 200 pounds, Green could be the inside help the Mavs have needed when Dirk is off the floor. “Could” be.

Dallas will be Green’s fourth team in as many years. He was drafted by the Celtics in 2005. He was then traded to Minnesota in the Kevin Garnett deal. Then he was sent to Houston, where he played one game before being released.

Diop Returns

By Daniel Dessinger | July 2, 2008

It’s a less than exciting day in Dallas where we receive the news that one of our own is returning home. DeSagana Diop was a part of the Devin Harris/Jason Kidd trade last season that many Dallas fans are still questioning. Was it the right move to make? Is Jason Kidd worth the loss of Harris, Diop, and the Mavericks’ only first round draft pick?

Answer: No. It was obviously not worth the lost draft pick if nothing else. Devin will be an excellent 2nd tier point guard in the league as he perfects his slash to the basket. He’s not a team leader or a playmaker, though, and that’s what Avery Johnson and Mark Cuban realized. Harris needs to be led, and the Mavs can’t afford to not have a leader at point.

Let’s take a quick look at the Dallas Mavericks’ roster in light of salaries. You can tell me if it makes sense or not. Let’s start with the top paid salary of the ‘07-’08 season.

Dirk Nowitzki ($16.3 million)
Erick Dampier ($10.6 million)
Josh Howard ($9.5 million)

Rick Carlisle and Other Changes

By Aaron Phillips | May 5, 2008

Rick Carlisle coming in to take over as head coach for the Mav’s is just the first inevitable domino that will fall this off season. I think Carlisle is a great choice for the Dallas. Both restructuring the roster and implementing a new vision and identity will be Carlisle’s biggest challenges. Do they restructure again and try to pick up some pieces that will compliment Dirk and Kidd? Or do they blow the whole team up and start shopping Dirk and Kidd to the highest bidder?

It looks like Dirk isn’t going anywhere. Not as long as Cuban and Donnie Nelson are running the team. As for Kidd - I doubt Cuban will admit that it was a mistake to trade for Kidd and that’s what he would be admitting if he shopped Kidd around. So this is how we can speculate it will go down: Kidd and Dirk are safe for the next season. Bass is likely a lock as well. Everybody else will be cut, traded, or retire (hopefully). Read More »

Yet Another Banner Design Coming

By Daniel Dessinger | May 3, 2008

If the rumors of a complete overhaul aren’t grossly exaggerated, MavsUpdate will be needing a new banner image yet again. The Mavs are sure to make some roster changes in addition to the head coach. One Bucks blogger is calling for a Josh Howard / Jerry Stackhouse trade for Michael Redd. That’s an interesting thought. Assuming Redd is as good as they say he is, he and Dirk could make an interesting combo. But Redd is not a name we’d necessarily get excited about here in Texas.

Certain names are more glamorous. Kobe. Nash. KG. Shaq. Gasol. Duncan. Bosch. LeBron. These are the types of names that draw a crowd. There ARE others, of course. But none, sadly, are likely to don a Mavericks jersey any time soon. Read More »
