Getting to Know a Brand New Dallas Mavericks Team

By Daniel Dessinger | March 16, 2008

I took most of the past month off. I kept track of the Jason Kidd trade and listened to Randy Galloway and Dale the snail Hansen talk about whether it was a good trade. But as far as the games were concerned, I had to get my updates from ESPN.com and 103.3FM ESPN Radio. Life’s kept me busy.

After a month away, I have to get reintroduced to my team. After all, it’s not the same team. There are new four players on this team in addition to Jason Kidd. Obviously, there’s no more Devin Harris, Trenton Hassell, DeSagana Diop, and whoever else Dallas traded. Now we’re looking at new players Antoine Wright, Jamaal Magloire, Tyronn Lue, and Malik Allen.

I don’t know much about these guys, so I’ll be learning as we go. Tyronn Lue has already made a splash, which isn’t surprising since he’s costing the Mavs less than $200k this year. I’m glad he’s on the team, but I wonder why he’s here. How many point guards does a team need? Seeing how J.J. Barea has started several times this year when Devin Harris was injured, what does this say about him? Avery obviously doesn’t trust his play enough to keep him at the backup PG spot. If that’s the case, why is he here? We’ll cover that in greater detail another time. I’m a Barea fan, but I don’t support wasting a spot on someone the coach doesn’t trust.

In the meantime, let’s see how the team meshes. They have an abundance of shooting guards and not enough centers. This could be a big problem come playoff time. Look for Erick Dampier to be the most pivotal player in the post season.
